The government on Wednesday gave approval in principle to two separate proposals to procure some 38.60 lakh tonnes of refined fuel oil and some 16 lakh tonnes of crude oil to meet the growing demand.

The approvals came from the 23rd meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) held virtually with Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in the chair.

State-owned Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) will import the entire petroleum.

Briefing reporters after the meeting virtually, Cabinet Division additional secretary Md Rahat Anwar said that the day's CCEA meeting approved a total of three proposals.

As per the proposal, 16 lakh tonnes of crude petroleum will be imported from ARAMCO of Saudi Arabia and ADNOC of Abu Dhabi through a direct procurement method.

The refined 38.6 lakh tonnes of petroleum will be imported from different countries on a G2G basis.

However, the sources of the import and the quantities were not disclosed.

The Cabinet Division additional secretary further informed that the "Chattogram Metropolitan Sewerage Project for Patenga Catchment" would be implemented under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative by the Chattogram WASA to build an environment-friendly sanitation system at Patenga and adjacent areas in Chattogram.
