Installation works of the first nuclear reactor of Rooppur nuclear power plant will begin in June, one step forward in the quest for generating nuclear power, said project director of Rooppur nuclear power plant Shawkat Akbar.

He said, “Installation of the nuclear reactor of the first unit will begin in June next after assembling of other machinery. Installation of the reactor is the main job of the nuclear power plant”.

“Installation of nuclear reactor requires perfect execution which is why we are doing our necessary work flawlessly at the project site” he added.

Other officials said that assemble of different tools in the first unit of the power plant is going on at a good pace. Russia sent a reactor, steam generator, and other heavy machinery for the first unit of the two units' power plants in October 2020.

Officials of the power plant told the Business Post that works of assembling all the machinery in the first unit of the power plant were now on.

Russian state Atomiс Energy Corporation, ROSATOM, on April 20, 2021, in a press release said that it had shipped reactor, steam generators, and other heavy machinery to Bangladesh from Volgodonsk.

The release also said that all the machinery was sent to Bangladesh after proper testing.

Project officials hoped that the 320-tonne reactor and two 340-tonne steam generations would reach Bangladesh by June this year and the pace of work of the second unit would gain momentum once all the machinery arrived at the country.

Shawkat Akbar said that 35 per cent of works had been completed so far. He hoped that the project would be completed within the stipulated time as the first unit is scheduled to go into operation by 2023 and the second unit by 2024.

There will be two nuclear reactors – each 1200 MW capacity – at Rooppur nuclear power plant in Pabna. The estimated cost of the project Tk 1,13,000 crore.

Russia is providing financial and technological help for this power plant.
