The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) on Monday reduced the prices of LPG and autogas at the consumer level for the month of June.

The price of a 12-kg cylinder of LPG was cut by Tk 30 to Tk 1,363 from Tk 1,393. BERC also fixed the retail price of LPG at Tk 113.55 per kg.

Along with LPG, the price of autogas used in vehicles came down to Tk 62.53 per litre, from last month’s Tk 63.92.

Addressing a press conference at the regulatory body’s office in Dhaka, BERC Chairman Nurul Amin said that the new prices will come into effect at 6pm on Monday.

There are however allegations that many consumers are being overcharged for LPG and autogas.

Until April 2021, LPG prices were set at the discretion of individual companies. However, with a significant policy shift on April 12, 2021, BERC announced that the base price for the import-dependent fuel would be pegged to the prices declared by Saudi state-owned company Aramco.

Since then, BERC has been regularly announcing LPG prices on a monthly basis.

However, despite these efforts, consumers have raised concerns about the market availability of LPG at the BERC-declared prices. Many frustrated consumers have alleged that LPG is not available at the specified price, with companies charging according to their discretion instead.
