Prime Minister's Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Affairs Adviser Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury said on Sunday that the country may have to go without electricity during the daytime if the current situation does not improve.

Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury made the remark while speaking as the chief guest at an event on "Mitigation of the Impact of Energy Crisis on the Industrial Sector" organised by the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI) at a hotel in the capital.

"None of us know in which direction the global situation will go. So, everyone should be prepared. Within the next two to three months, 80 million cubic feet of gas will be shipped from the Bhola gas field and added to the national grid," he said.

"Then, we would be able to reduce the gas supply for electricity generation and give some gas for industrial use. If the situation does not improve after this, we may have to refrain from using any electricity during the day, if necessary," he added.

He urged all to be economical in using electricity to ensure electricity supply for all, especially in industries.

Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) President Md Jashim Uddin attended the event as the guest of honour, while Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) President Mohammad Ali Khokon, Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) President Md Saiful Islam, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Faruque Hassan, Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) President Mahbubul Alam, among others, spoke on the occasion.

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) professor (retd) Dr Ijaz Hossain delivered the keynote presentation.

In his speech, Tawfiq-e-Elahi further informed that some coal-based power plants will come into production soon.
