Most areas in Sadar, Shibchar, Kalkini, Rajoir, and Dasar upazilas of Madaripur district have been without electricity since Friday night due to a fault in the power line amid torrential rains, causing suffering to people.
The 4G network of mobile phone operators has remained suspended since Saturday and the presence of battery-run three-wheelers on roads is also so thin due to the disruption in power supply for the past 42 hours.
Locals said that though the rain and wind started Saturday morning, the power supply has been suspended since Friday night due to a fault in the supply line.
Admitting the power outages in the district, Rural Electricity Board’s Zonal Manager Mohammad Jonab Ali said power supply is normal in some areas of the district town while other parts and the upazilas have no electricity.
As of filing this report around 2 pm on Sunday, power outages continue throughout the district.
Incessant rain has also caused the poor presence of students in schools and colleges, while markets remain almost without buyers.
Mohammad Abbas Ali, a school teacher from Shibchar, said due to the rain, student attendance is very low. “We have been facing difficulties since yesterday (Saturday) due to the power outage. Our mobile phone batteries are almost dead."
According to the Shibchar upazila office of the Rural Electricity Board, power disruptions began early Saturday morning.
Problems with the main power line due to storms and rain have caused power-supply suspension. Workers have been working to restore the electricity since yesterday, they said.
Md Ali, an official from the Madaripur Rural Electricity Board, said the adverse weather has caused faults in the power lines. Their team is working to restore the power supply.
