The United States (US) has no objection to Bangladesh importing fuel oil from Russia, said Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, advisor to the Prime Minister for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources.

“The US under secretary has confirmed that there is no restriction on the import of food, fertilizer, and fuel. The government is thinking of importing fuel oil from Russia and other countries. I don't think the US would have any objection to sourcing oil from Russia or any other source," Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury said during a press briefing at the Prime Minister's Office on Wednesday.

He also said, “Increasing or decreasing the price of oil by Tk 5 has no effect. Rather it should have been kept where it was extended. Because we don't know what will happen next.”

On August 5, the Energy and Mineral Resources Division raised diesel and kerosene prices by 42.5 per cent and petrol and octane prices by 51 per cent. The National Board of Revenue reduced import duty from 10 per cent to 5 per cent and eliminated all advance taxes on diesel on Monday.
