The power supply has been restored in parts of Dhaka and five other districts, hours after a grid failure caused widespread blackouts across Bangladesh on Tuesday afternoon.

Electricity returned to Dhaka's different areas, including Tejgaon, Moghbazar, Rampura, Motijheel, Gulshan, Bashundhara, Dhanmondi, Mirpur, and five other districts — Tangail, Kishoreganj, Mymensingh, Jamalpur, and Manikganj.

The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources informed the matter on its verified Facebook page.

Besides, the power supply has also been restored in parts of Gazipur, Narayanganj, Chattogram, and Sylhet, it said.

Earlier, ICT State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak said that the power supply was likely to be restored in all areas of Dhaka city by 8:00pm while in Chattogram by 9:00pm.

Meanwhile, the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) has formed a six-member committee, led by its Executive Director Yakub Elahi Chowdhury, to investigate the reason behind the national grid failure, according to the ministry.

The national power transmission grid failed around 2:05pm – causing power outages across the country, except in some parts of the north.

According to officials at Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and PGCB, the transmission line tripped somewhere in the eastern part of the country, especially in districts on the east of the Jamuna River.

Following the grid failure, all power plants tripped one after another and electricity supply went off in Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, Barishal and Mymensingh divisions.
