State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has said the use of solar power is must for ensuring prosperity of the next generation, according to a message received Monday.

“Solar energy should be utilised in a coordinated way. Bangladesh has taken bold steps to promote renewable energy and solar power,” he said this Sunday while speaking at a discussion organised by International Solar Alliance (ISA) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The state minister said, “We are committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 61.9 million tons of carbon dioxide by 2030, which will help to build a green Bangladesh.”

He said that 300 MW of solar power was added to the energy mix last year, while 37 projects have been going on to implement for 2,400 MW of solar power.

Moreover 5,000 MW of renewable energy generation projects are in various stages and another 5000 MW is in at the approval stage, Nasrul Hamid said.

He said Bangladesh has taken innovative steps in solar technology through floating solar power, solar home systems, mini grids, solar irrigation and solar rooftops due to land constraints.

“ISA's vision is reflected in recently approved of the Integrated Energy and Power Master Plan-2023 which sets a target of 50.4 trillion Watt Hour of clean electricity imports annually by 2050. Moreover, there are plans to import renewable energy from neighbouring countries by increasing regional cooperation,” Nasrul added.

He said that there is no alternative to expansion of renewable energy for sustainable development and a clean future.

ISA Director General Dr Ajay Mathur along with representatives of member countries was present in the discussion.
