Bollywood director Hansal Mehta on Wednesday announced his next film, titled ‘Faraaz’, based on the gruesome terror attack at the Holey Artisan Cafe in Dhaka’s Gulshan in 2016, reports Indian Express.

The action-thriller will star actor-producer Shashi Kapoor’s grandson Zahaan Kapoor and Paresh Rawal’s son Aditya Rawal in lead roles.

Meanwhile, makers of the film launched a motion poster disclosing the title and cast. A cafe can be seen burning in the 23-second video that ends following a dialogue in Hindi that can be translated x: “A person will kill religion if he kills in the name of religion”.

A joint production of Anubhav Sinha and Bhushan Kumar, the film chronicles the events that took place on the night of July 1, 2016, at the Holey Artisan Cafe when it came under attack by a group of militants and dozens were taken hostage inside the posh restaurant.

Hansal Mehta, in a statement, said that ‘Faraaz’s story is special for him not only because it’s rooted in reality but also because it has stayed with him for nearly three years.

“Faraaz is a story of deep humanity and its ultimate triumph in the face of violent adversity. While it is based on true events, it is also a deeply personal story that I’ve held close to my heart for nearly three years. I’m glad Anubhav and Bhushanji are backing this story and enabling me to make this thrilling drama exactly the way I envisaged. It is exciting to collaborate with such diverse young talent on this labour of love. I can’t wait for the world to see this film,” he added.

Producer Anubhav Sinha said: “‘Faraaz’ is as much a story of terror and loss as it is of hope and faith.”

“Faraaz is a human story based on one of the darkest days in modern history. It is a film that is close to our hearts. From launching new actors to getting the gaze of the film right, we have done our best to imbue this story with ingenuity while keeping it suspenseful and thrilling. It’s a film that will give the audience a deeply intimate look into what happened that night. It is as much a story of terror and loss as it is of hope and faith,” Anubhav said further.

‘Faraaz’ marks the big screen debut of both Aditya Rawal and Zahan Kapoor.

However, a total of 22 people including two police officers lost their lives in the grisly terror attack that shook Bangladesh in 2016.

Young Faraaz Ayaaz Hossain and his two friends were among the hostages. Faraaz declined to flee the spot leaving his friends after he was asked by the attackers to flee. Faraaz was also brutally killed but he is still remembered for his spirit of friendship and solidarity.
