Beginning her journey on television with a programme titled ‘Adventure Bangladesh’ back in 2000, popular actress Moutushi Biswas first grabbed the attention of the audience for her acting in the drama serial ‘Ekannoborti’ in 2004. In the later years, she continued to garner appreciation for her performance in tele-drama, drama serial and films. She again caught viewer’s attention when she acted in Mostofa Sarwar Farooki’s directorial debut film ‘Bachelor’. In her latest web series titled ‘Spotlight’, one of the three stories of the Bioscope original anthology series ‘Bou Diaries’, she has played the role of the protagonist and been receiving positive response from different quarters.

In ‘Spotlight’, written by Matia Banu Shuku and directed by Sameer Ahmed, Moutushi appears as Nabila, a middle-aged woman who struggles in her acting career. With the release of ‘Spotlight’ during last Eid-ul-Azha, any of Moutushi’s project got released one year after her last web film ‘Arai Mon Swapna’ was released.

“My web series ‘Spotlight’ saw its release at a time when several big-budget and much-anticipated web series hit different OTT platforms one after another. Truly speaking, I was very tense about the audiences’ response. But, I started getting very positive response from the audience as they have appreciated the web series as well as my character. I am really overwhelmed and delighted with the reactions coming from the viewers. No words are enough to express my gratitude to the audience for their feedback,” Moutushi shared her feelings about receiving positive feedback from the viewers.

“Truly speaking, all these positive feedback and reaction from the viewers, fans and my well-wishers have inspired me to do more good works in future. I feel like I am on the right track and my responsibility towards my audience has increased”, the actress added.

Asked about her role in ‘Spotlight’, Moutushi said that her character, Nabila, after a long successful acting career, begins to witness her decline. The spotlight she once had now belongs to someone else.

“My character in ‘Spotlight’ deals with the professional transition of a female artiste in the showbiz industry from her tender age to middle age. In our entertainment industry, completely driven by patriarchal mindset, no stories or characters are being created for the middle-aged female artistes as they grow older naturally and start losing their charm over the course of time. On the other hand, male artistes even at the age of 50 or over get opportunity to act with young female artistes. Now, think of the situation of the 50-year-old female artistes. Do they have the equal opportunity that their male colleagues enjoy?,” Moutushi shared the main theme of the web series ‘Spotlight’ by throwing a question.

“After a long successful and eventful acting career, Nabila begins to experience the other side of the coin as she reaches her middle age. The spotlight now belongs to others who are young and charming,” she continued.

“Actually, our industry cannot overcome the patriarchal mindset it cherishes. It fails to provide level-playing field for both male and female artistes. As a result, despite having brilliant acting skills and the ability to perform, most of the female artistes become the victims of the circumstances at one stage of their lives and have to leave the industry after being deprived by the system. Female artistes in the Western media industry enjoy equal opportunity like their male co-artistes, so do the female artistes in the Bollywood. No age barrier can stop them from playing the role of the protagonist or lead roles even at the age of 50 or more. I think this is the right time for our industry to break this conventional mindset and ensure equal opportunity for both male and female artistes”, Moutushi underscored.

In reply to a question about her involvement in ‘Spotlight’, she said, “I got a call from the director and received the script after a few days. I liked the script and my character in the web series, so I agreed to work.”

“The entire team of ‘Spotlight’, including my co-artistes and director, was really very supportive. Overall, it was a wonderful experience to work in this project. I am thankful to the director, Sameer Ahmed, for giving me the opportunity to play the lead role in the story. Actor Ahmed Rubel appeared as my husband in the web series,” Moutushi further added.

Moutushi urges the viewers to watch all the wonderful productions, including her latest web series. She thinks if the audiences watch their productions, all their hard work will be paid off.

“I seek prayer and best wishes from the audience so that I can deliver better works in the coming days,” she concluded.
