‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ to be released in Jan

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has finally confirmed the new release date for ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi,’ starring Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn, after keeping fans waiting for a long time. The film’s new release date has been set for January 6, 2022. The film was supposed to be released this year, but it had to be postponed due to the pandemic, reports Times of India.

The official handle of Bhansali’s production house took to social media and wrote, “The wait to witness her power, strength & resilience ends. Bringing to you a stem-winding story of #GangubaiKathiawadi on 6th January 2022, in cinemas near you.”

Earlier, Alia left everyone stunned with her first look as Gangubai. Her fans are eagerly waiting to watch her in a different avatar on the big screen.

‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ tells the story of a Gujarati woman who was betrayed, sold off, and forced into prostitution after arriving in Mumbai with her partner. In the mid-nineteenth century, Kathiawadi developed relationships with a slew of underworld leaders and gained control of parts of South Mumbai. She became a brothel proprietor and is believed to have worked for the upliftment of women and orphans in Mumbai’s Kamathipura red light district.

Recently, speaking about the film, Bhansali told, “Gangubai Kathiawadi is a very special film to me. It has not been easy. We made it during the pandemic, and I have given it my all. I can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

Alia Bhatt had wrapped the shoot of the film in June this year. The film also stars dancer-turned-actor Shantanu Maheshwari, who will be seen playing Alia’s love interest. The film is partially based on the book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’ by S Hussain Zaidi.
