Azmeri Haque Badhon starrer highly-anticipated film ‘Rehana Maryam Noor’ is set to make its entry into the race for the Oscars as Bangladesh’s submission in the ‘Best International Feature Film Category’.
‘Rehana Maryam Noor’, directed by Bangladeshi filmmaker Abdullah Mohammad Saad, was screened at the prestigious ‘Un Certain Regard’ section of the 74th Cannes International Film Festival and received a standing ovation from the audience. It is the first Bangladeshi film to be featured in ‘Un Certain Regard’ section of Cannes.
No other film except ‘Rehana Maryam Noor’ was submitted to the Oscar Bangladesh Committee to enter the competition as the submission deadline closed on October 15.
Oscar Bangladesh Submission Committee Coordinator Abdullah Al Maruf said that ‘Rehana Maryam Noor’ was the lone submission that they received on October 14.
The film will be sent to the Oscars authorities online following a close watch today, he said.
At the 2021 Academy Awards, the anthology film ‘Sincerely Yours, Dhaka (Iti, Tomari Dhaka)’ battled for the Best Foreign Language Film award as Bangladesh’s official entry.
Written and directed by Abdullah Mohammad Saad and produced by Jeremy Chua under the banner of Metro Video and co-produced by Sensemakers Productions, ‘Rehana Maryam Noor’ is the story of Rehana Maryam Noor, a 37-year-old assistant professor of a medical college, played by Azmeri Haque Badhon.
Having bagged various accolades, ‘Rehana Maryam Noor’ also has secured the nomination at Hong Kong Asian Film Festival in the New Talent Award section recently.
Badhon also got the nomination for ‘Best Performance by an Actress’ for her role ‘Rehana Maryam Noor’ in the 14th Asia-Pacific Screen Awards.
The 94th Academy Awards will take place on March 27, 2022 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
The Best International Feature Film Award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains 50 per cent or more of non-English dialogue.
