National Film Award-winning filmmaker Syed Wahiduzzaman Diamond’s latest film ‘Rohingya’ has received the censor clearance and is eying a theatrical release soon.

The film ‘Rohingya’, which took 14 years to complete, was cleared by the Bangladesh Film Censor Board (BFCB) on Tuesday, director Diamond confirmed The Business Post on Thursday.

“I have been filming this film since 2007 because I was waiting for the final decision about the Rohingyas from the government. As it is a burning issue, I wanted to shoot for a long time to portray the situation more accurately. Finally in August, I decided to finish the shooting,” said the director.

“I hope the audience will love the film. I have plans to release the film in OTT platforms too,” he added.

The life of the people of Myanmar’s ethnic Rohingya community, who have been residing in several refugee camps in Bangladesh, is the main focus of the film.

The film aims to provide audiences a look into the struggle of the Rohingya refugees, who left their homeland Myanmar in 2017 and 2018 due to violence and persecution.

“The film will give audiences a look into the plight of the 7,30,000 Rohingyas who fled their country after the Myanmar government started a military assault in Rakhine province,” said Syed Wahiduzzaman, who also wrote the storyline and screenplay of the film.

The shooting took place at Ukhiya Camp in Cox’s Bazar, Naf River and Shahparir Dwip in Teknaf.

The film ‘Rohinya’ is produced by Shabnam Shahnaz Chowdhury, who earlier produced a number of award-winning films by Syed Wahiduzzaman Diamond.

Diamond won the National Film Award for the film ‘Gangajatra’ in 2009.

Actress Arshi Hossain has played the lead role of a Rohingya woman in the film. It also features Omar Ayaz Oni, Suchi, Sagar, Brishti, Tanjid, Hayatuzzaman, and Inam Ahmed in different roles.
