6 movies to heat up theatres this month

The cinema industry has started gaining momentum gradually with the release of the latest films which remained stuck for the pandemic-induced situation in Bangladesh. With the reopening of cinema halls, a few new films have already been released and many others are gearing up to hit theatres.

A number of films are already lined up for making a theatrical release in December promising fresh hope for filmmakers who had suffered a loss due to the delay in releasing big-screen projects.

‘Mission Extreme’, the highly-anticipated cop action thriller featuring Arifin Shuvoo, Taskeen Ahmed, Jannatul Ferdous Oishee and Sumit Sengupta, is all set to release in theatres tomorrow, ending the wait for around one and a half years.

Talking to The Business Post on Wednesday, Foysal Ahmed, one of the directors of ‘Mission Extreme’, said, “All of the industry had to suffer for the pandemic, but the producers were the worst victims. A large amount of money invested by them got stuck for many months.”

“We could not release the film during the Eid-ul-Fitr last year due to the pandemic. Finally, we are releasing it tomorrow. Initially, we are expecting to release ‘Mission Extreme’ in around 50 theatres in Bangladesh,” he added.

The director further shared that many halls are yet to be back into a fit condition to screen films after their closure for many months. “It is a great barrier for the screening of a film in such theatres which are yet to regain a proper environment. After remaining shut for such a long time, the halls require proper maintenance, otherwise, it may create a bad impression on the audience.”

Director Anjan Aich is also gearing up to release his debut directorial venture for the silver screen, titled ‘Agamikal’, featuring Mamnun Emon, Zakia Bari Mamo and Shatabdi Wadud.

“Finally, the film is getting a theatrical release on December 24, ending a long wait for around a year. We had a plan to release the film in October last year after wrapping up it in September. The delay is only for the pandemic when halls were not open as well,” Anjan Aich told The Business Post.

“We have set a full-fledged plan three months ago for the release of ‘Agamikal’. I was even approached by OTT platforms for releasing the film before, but I had denied it as my main motto was to let the audience watch the film in cinema halls. Therefore, I halted the release for months,” he added Anjan.

Late film editor freedom fighter and director Saidul Anam Tutul’s Liberation War based film ‘Kalbela’, which was completed by his widow Mobasshwera Khanam following his death in 2018, is scheduled to be released on December 10.

Mobashwera Khanam said, “We are all set to release ‘Kalbela’ on December 10. We will disclose the hall list within a couple of days. Before that, the film will be premiered on December 8 at the Liberation War Museum in Dhaka”.

She shared with The Business Post that the film was expected to be released in 2020, which was later cancelled due to the pandemic. ‘Kalbela’ won the government grants for the fiscal year 2017-18. It has Tahmina Authoi, Shishir Ahmed, Jayanta Chattopadhyay, Lutfar Rahman George and Tanvir Masud, among others.

Another highly-anticipated film ‘Laal Moroger Jhuti’, directed by Nurul Alam Atique and produced by Matia Banu Shuku under the banner of Pandulipi Karkhana finally heading to theatres seven years after the film won government grants in the fiscal year 2014-15.

‘Laal Moroger Jhuti’ will be released in theatres on December 10, Matia Banu Shuku confirmed The Business Post on Wednesday. The film has already created a buzz with the release of its official trailer recently. It has an ensemble cast of Laila Hasan, Ahmed Rubel, Ashna Habib Bhabna, Ashok Bepari, Ashish Khandaker, Joyraj, Shilpi Sharkar, Elora Gawhor, Jyotika Jyoti, Dilruba Doyel, Swagota, Shahjahan Samrat, Dipak Sumon and Ananta Munir, among others.

However, Rokibul Alam Rokib, director of the upcoming film ‘Biye Aami Korbona’ starring Mamnun Emon, Tanha Tasnia and Kazi Hayat, shared with The Business Post that all halls have not reopened yet and many of them are not fully prepared yet to screen films. Therefore, he decided to plan Biye Aami Korbona’s release in January.

Of other upcoming films, actor-director Meer Sabbir’s first directorial venture, titled ‘Raat Jaga Ful’ starring Abul Hayat, Fazlur Rahman Babu, Joyraj, Mamun Apu and Abdullah Rana and HR Habib directed ‘Chhitmahal’ are also awaiting releases.
