New trailer for ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ sparks déjà vu

Warner Bros released a new trailer for the upcoming ‘Matrix: Resurrections’ on Monday , offering a few more tidbits to help the audience to puzzle out how this film will continue the original trilogy’s story despite its seemingly definitive ending, reports Hollywood reporter.

The nearly three-minute trailer gives audiences a more in-depth look at the upcoming sequel, which features the return of franchise veterans Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith, as well as newcomers Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Christina Ricci. As with the initial trailer, there’s a deliberate repetition of images and ideas from the original trilogy, especially the first movie. For example, the characters played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen, Jessica Henwick, Telma Hopkins, and Jonathan Groff superficially resemble Morpheus, Switch, the Oracle, and Agent Smith respectively, and it seems that Neo is reliving that arc of the first movie, of waking up from a previous life into a new reality.

Shots of Reeves’ Neo and Moss’ Trinity strapped inside machines hint that the two may be, once again, trapped inside the Matrix and unaware of it, while also finding themselves drawn to each other.

One of the biggest questions the sequel will have to answer is, how are Neo and Trinity alive after their characters appeared to die at the end of the 2003 installment, The Matrix Revolutions?

The Matrix Resurrections hits theaters and HBO Max on December 22.
