Actress Azmeri Haque Bahdon has found a place on the list of International Breakout Stars, for the year 2021, prepared by American weekly entertainment publication Variety Magazine.
“Bangladeshi model and television actor Badhon broke through internationally this year with her first major role in a feature film, ‘Rehana Maryam Noor’,” the magazine wrote about Badhon as it unveiled the annual list on Thursday.
The magazine further wrote about Badhon’s role in the highly-anticipated film, “Badhon plays a single mother who teaches in a medical college, who speaks out against a sexual assault and, in doing so, challenges a wall of authority.”
The list of International Breakout Stars features 11 performers, including Korean American actor Don Lee who is famed for ‘Heaven Soldiers’, ‘Train to Busan’ and ‘The Outlaws’, South Korea’s ‘Squid Game’ star Jung Ho Yeon, and India’s Adarsh Gourav who is famed for Ramin Bahrani’s adaptation of Booker-winning novel ‘The White Tiger’ and Deepa Mehta’s 2019 Netflix series ‘Leila’.
British actor Toheeb Jimoh of Apple TV Plus comedy original ‘Ted Lasso’, and Italy’s Swamy Rotolo of Jonas Carpignano’s ‘A Chiara’ and Ondina Quadri of Carlo Lavagna’s gender identity drama ‘Arianna,’ Spain’s Almudena Amor of San Sebastian competition film ‘La Abuela’ and France’s ‘Summer of 85’ star Benjamin Voisin were also named on the list.
As for Azmeri Haque Badhon, the actress created waves for her portrayal of the character Rehana in the highly-anticipated Bangladeshi film ‘Rehana Maryam Noor’, directed by Abdullah Mohammad Saad, which was screened in the prestigious ‘Un Certain Regard’ sidebar of Cannes Film Festival in July this year and also received a standing ovation.
The film brought Badhon the Best Actress award at the 14th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) and its director Abdullah Mohammad Saad won the Jury Grand Prize at the same festival based in Australia.
Having earned a lot of positive feedback from critics and audiences all around the world, ‘Rehana Maryam Noor’ also bagged the New Talent Award at Hong Kong Asian film Festival this year.
The film, however, could not make it to the shortlist of 15 finalists in the International Feature Film Category for the Oscars 2022 as the list of finalists were announced recently.
On the work front, Azmeri Haque Badhon is now gearing up to resume her second schedule shooting in acclaimed Indian director Vishal Bhardwaj’s film ‘Khufiya’ early next year.
‘Khufiya’ is an adaptation of Amar Bhushan’s espionage novel ‘Escape to Nowhere’, both directed and produced by Vishal Bhardwaj under the banner of his Vishal Bhardwaj Films. Marking Badhon’s debut in Bollywood, the film also features Tabu, Ali Fazal, Ashish Vidyarthi and Wamiqa Gabbi.
Badhon will next be seen in Bangladeshi-born British filmmaker Sadik Ahmed’s psychotic-thriller ‘A Blessed Man’ co-starring with Tahsan Khan which was announced in November.
