Korean space thriller ‘The Silent Sea’ ranks third in Netflix global

The Korean Netflix original series ‘The Silent Sea’ climbed to third place on Netflix’s global rankings just four days after its release, creating another sensation following ‘Squid Game’ and ‘Hellbound.’

On ‘The Silent Sea,’ a group of desperate individuals enter into a perilous situation as a last-ditch attempt for salvation; their quest begins with the painful recognition of the economic inequality of their world, reports Variety.

“The Silent Sea” tells the story of a dystopian future where water scarcity has turned the once lush and green Earth into a wasteland. At this time, in a final attempt to save the world, a crew of astronauts including space biologist Dr. Song JiAn (Bae DooNa), Captain Han YunJae (Gong Yoo), Captain Ryu TaeSeok (Lee Joon), Dr. Hong GaYoung (Kim SunYoung) and more, are sent to the moon in order to retrieve a mysterious “sample”. The series is based on a short film of the same name directed by Choi Hang-yong. The film was well-received at the 2014 Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival and has now been made into an 8-episode series.

Choi was in charge of directing the series while writer Park Eun-kyo, who wrote the screenplays for both ‘Mother’ (2009) and ‘Crush and Blush’ (2008), took part in the creation of the screenplay.

The show has received mixed reviews. It uses high-level computer graphics to depict space and the lunar surface, and the elaborate implementation of the space base on a set that measured around 8,900 square meters was particularly well-received.

Although the storyline can feel familiar for the genre, some say the way the show dealt with the subject of water was creative.
