Lyricist Russell O’neil found dead at Tejgaon home

Members of Police have recovered the hanging body of lyricist Russell O’neil, 47, from his Tejgaon residence in the capital on Thursday night.

The news came with a huge shock to the country’s music fraternity as law enforcers were suspecting that Russell committed suicide. A suicide note was also recovered from the spot.

Lyricists Association of Bangladesh (Gitikobi Songho), in a Facebook post wrote that “Renowned lyricist Russell O’Neil’ is no longer among us. He died at his home in Lichu Bagan area under Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station on Thursday night (December 30).”

Many celebrities including singer Pritom Ahmed and noted lyricists Asif Iqbal and Zulfiqer Russell wrote on their social media handles and expressed deep shock over the death of Russell O’neil.

Mehbubul Hasan Russell, better known by his pen name Russell O’neil, is mostly known for writing many songs such as ‘Din Bari Jay’, ‘Shurjo Snane Chol’ and ‘Monta Tomar Kena’ for the prominent band Dalchhut and Bappa Mazumder.

Along with penning songs, Russell also proved his creativity by writing jingles for TV commercials.

His body was sent to the morgue of Shahid Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital (SSMCH) for autopsy. Investigation of law enforcers is underway over the matter.
