Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy is organising a jatrapala (traditional stage drama) titled ‘Nisshongo Lorai’, directed by Saidur Rahman Lipon, as part of its initiatives to celebrate birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence.
With the plot based on Bangabandhu’s solitary confinement in Lyallpur jail in the then West Pakistan, the drama will take place at the academy’s Experimental Theatre Hall today, said a press release.
When Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was confined by Pakistani army on March 25, 1971, he was sent to a desolate prison at the hottest region Lyallpur via Karachi and Lahore. At the end of the Liberation War, when Yahya Khan understood that Pakistan was going to lose the war, he plotted to kill Bangabandhu by a false trial. The trial was held at Lyallpur jail. Though at the end of the Liberation War, Pakistani army did not succeed to kill Bangabandhu. The story of the palagan ‘Nisshongo Lorai’ is based on Bangabandhu’s prison life in Lyallpur.
The story is written by Masum Reza. He said, “I have written this story based on the true event at the invitation of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. This is my first time writing a jatrapala. I am grateful to Liakat Ali Lucky, Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy for giving me such an opportunity. Saidur Rahman Lipon is directing the show. I am confident that we will see a successful show on the stage under his guidance. Wahida Mollick Jolly has worked as an advisory director for it. I express my gratitude to both of them.”
In ‘Nisshongo Lorai’, the role of Bangabandhu will be played by Mithun Islam. SM Shofi and Afsaruzzaman Rony will appear as Yahya Khan and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto respectively.
