Prachyanat pays tribute to Elias staging ‘Khoabnama’

Theatre troupe Prachyanat staged its 37th production ‘Khoabnama’, written by Akhtaruzzaman Elias, paying tribute to the eminent writer on his 25th death anniversary on Sunday.

The show took place at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy at 7:00pm.

‘Khoabnama’ is a stage adaptation of novelist and short story writer Akhtaruzzaman Elias’ novel of the same name. The drama was directed by Kazi Toufiqul Islam with its script from Md Shawkat Hossain Sajib.

The much-acclaimed novel ‘Khoabnama’ is a detailed account of the life of the people in the backdrop of the 1947 partition of Bengal. Through this story, the novelist has skillfully portrayed the life and reality of that time.

The characters of the drama are named as Majnu Shah, Agunati Fakir, Teller, Munshi, Cherag Ali Fakir, Bhabani Pathak, Baikunthanath Giri, Tamiz, Kulsum and Keramat, among others.

‘Khoabnama’ is a historical depiction of Bengal when the British colonial era was heading towards its end. It shed light on various socio-political realities like a sectarian riot, the conflict between peasants and landlords, rebellion of the peasants etc in that period.

The drama has performers like Sanjida Preeti, Sakhawat Hossain Rezvi, Monirul Islam Rubel, Chetona Rahman Vasha, Shashanko Kumar Saha, Md Sohel Rana, Mitul Rahman, Tanji Kun, Saidur Rahman Shahin and Shrabon Shamim in various roles.

Song in the drama was composed by Rahul Ananda while Neel Kamrul did its music. The show was choreographed by Snata Shahrin. ABS Xem designed the stage while the lighting system was done by Thandu Raihan by.

Earlier on Saturday, Prachyanat released a musical promo on their social media page ahead of staging the play ‘Khoabnama’ on Sunday.

Considered as one of the powerful writers in modern Bengali literature, Akhtaruzzaman Elias was born in Gaibandha on February 12, 1943.

His short story collections are –‘Chilekothar Sepai’ and ‘Khoabnama’ to his credit. His short story collections are – ‘Dojokher Om’, ‘Dudhbhate Utpat’, ‘Onno Ghore Onno Shor’, ‘Khoari’ and ‘Jal Shopno, Shopner Jal’. Elias has two novels to his credit—‘Chilekothar Sepai’ and ‘Khoabnama’.

Having received many awards including Bangla Academy Sahitya Puraskar and Ekushey Padak (posthumously), Elias died at the age of 54 on January 4 in 1997.
