472 songs of legendary Baul singer Shah Abdul Karim have been brought under copyright protection, providing a portion of his distinguished works of traditional music with security from infringement.
Karim’s son Shah Noor Jalal has been fighting for copyright protection for years now. Finally, after 12 years of his father’s death, it has been made possible with help from copyright registrar Zafar Raza and singers Zooel Morshed and Md Sarowar Shuvo.
“Shuvo and I communicated with Karim’s family and copyright registrar Zafar Raza about the rights to his songs. We managed to track down a total of 472 songs written by him and registered those. But we could not find hundreds of other songs which were also written by him. We are trying to collect those songs now,” singer Zooel told The Business Post.
He added, “We have a plan to take another initiative to preserve his original compositions. We all know that the tune of the folk or Baul songs tend to get distorted as the songs are covered by singers around the country time and time. We plan to protect the original tunes from his direct disciples, and release them on digital platforms.”
Shah Abdul Karim won the hearts of the audience with songs like ‘Bonde Maya Lagaise’, ‘Keno Piritee Barailare Bondhu’, ‘Gari Cholena Cholena’, ‘Boshonto Batashe Shoigo’ among many others.
On September 12, 2009, the legendary Baul breathed his last at the age of 93 at Sylhet.
