Theatre troupe Nagorik Natyangan Ensemble’s production of French playwright Jean Anouilh, titled ‘Eurydice’, will have its first staging on Today.

The drama will be staged at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy at 6:00pm.

Mancha Sarathi Ataur Rahman, theatre personalities Jamaluddin Hossain and Khairul Alam Sabuj and actor-dramatist Chandan Reza are scheduled to attend the inaugural event of the play.

The dramatic adaptation of ‘Eurydice’ is translated by Khairul Alam Sabuj and directed by Chanchal Saikat.

Hasan Harun, Chanchal Saikat, Helen Hasan, Sayeed Rahman, Shefali Parveen Sathi, Rubel Ahmed, Shahinur Rahman, Afif, Jayanta Ganguly and Din Islam, are among the performers of the play.

Written by Jean Anouilh in 1941, the story of ‘Eurydice’ is based on the 1930s.

The play is an ironic retelling of the classical Orpheus myth that sheds light on skepticism about romance showing the intense love story of Orphee and Eurydice with mysticism.

Its plot revolves around a group of travelling performers at a train station.

The titular character Eurydice is the daughter of one of the leading performers who falls in love with Orphee. At the end, the couple reunite as ghosts following the death of Orphee.

Director Chanchal Saikat said, “The drama ‘Eurydice’ highlights the social and moral degradation and the essence of eternal love, simultaneously. Many of the youth generation are getting derailed due to moral decay while some others are losing everything by falling prey to love. The drama has a message regarding social inconsistency and injustice”.

Khairuzzaman Mitu is the costume designer of the play while Saif Mondal is behind the lighting system. Set of the drama is designed by Shaon Sagir Sagor and its music is planned by Anisur Rahman Shahin.
