Deepanwita Martin rose like a phoenix when she clinched the National Film Award 2020 for her brilliant performance in the critically acclaimed film ‘Gor’ directed by Gazi Rakayet. She drew public attention first in the drama ‘Golden A+’ directed by Abu Shahed Emon. She mostly worked in feature films like ‘Made In Bangladesh’, ‘Payer Tolay Mati Nai’ among others. In a candid conversation with The Business Post’s Antara Raisa, Deepanwita talked about her career and feelings
How did you react when you came to know of your winning the National Film Award for the first time?
When I first heard the news, I didn’t believe it. I couldn’t grasp the idea that I really got this award. Of course, it is a huge achievement for me. When my family and colleagues called to congratulate me, then I believed I really got the award. And certainly, I felt good.
You are in the film industry for around ten years and you have done some good, experimental films but remained ignored on media. How do you see sudden media attention on you after you got the national award?
I have been in this industry for long but there was a time I wasn’t getting any good film or there was no value for the acting in our industry. I was an introvert too. That’s why even after doing good films; I didn’t get that media attention. But now I feel good that finally, my hard work pays off. Any type of recognition is a big inspiration.
When you were preparing for the film ‘Gor’, did you ever think that this film will be the turning point in your career or you will get recognition for this film?
Whenever I do any work, I don’t think of the achievement. I want to do my work dedicatedly and passionately. That’s what I did in ‘Gor’. I delivered my best. When the film was finished, my colleagues and others who saw the film, told me that this film is going to get recognition. That time my expectation grew. But really I didn’t think I will get the National Film Award for this. This is obviously the biggest achievement for an artiste.
Are you feeling extra pressure on your shoulder right now after getting the award? Are you feeling like now you have to prove yourself worthy of this award?
I have been getting a lot of offers now. Among them, I have accepted some of them. Now, I am looking forward to good scripts and production. I used to write scripts before, but now I am reading the scripts even more carefully because of this responsibility. If I make mistakes now, it will be noticeable pretty easily. This is good for me too. Now I am working on my acting skills more passionately and thriving for good films.
What type of stories or films do you want to work on in future?
The film is my first love. I want to do more good films. But one thing I know for sure is that I don’t want to repeat the same characters in different films. I want to do more versatile and challenging characters in future. Whatever I do, I want to do that with love, care and passion.
What are your plans for OTT platforms?
I do want to work on more films. This is my first priority. But if I get a good script and director, I will definitely work on OTT platforms too. Not everyone is a good filmmaker. If someone has that passion for good work, I will work with them.
Who or what is the biggest inspiration behind your acting?
When I was a child, my uncles and cousins used to do theatres. They insisted me to join the theatre. That time, I realised that I really love doing acting. I still feel the same joy and euphoria when I act. Whenever I act, I feel like doing more and more. I never get tired.
There was a time when directors didn’t take me in their dramas or film. Even some directors told me that if we take you then this drama won’t sell. My love and passion for acting is the only thing that kept me going. This is my biggest inspiration.
What are your current ventures?
Right now, I am shooting for a web series titled ‘Nikhoj’ for Chorki. The web series is directed by Dihan Rahman.
