The five-day festival ‘Amar Bhashar Chalachchitra 1428’ hosted by the Dhaka University Film Society concluded on Saturday through the announcement of the Hiralal Sen Padak, named after the first filmmaker of the subcontinent.

‘Nonajoler Kabbo’, ‘Raat Jaga Phool’, ‘Rehana Maryam Noor’, ‘Chandrabati Kotha’, and ‘Laal Morger Jhuti’ got nominations for the award and it finally went to Rezwan Shahriar Sumit’s “Nonajoler Kabbo.” Liberation War drama “Laal Moroger Jhuti” grabbed the Best Story award.

N Rashed Chowdhury’s “Chandrabati Kotha” bagged the Best Cinematography award, while Abdullah Mohammad Saad’s “Rehana Maryam Noor” won the Best Editing award.

Renowned filmmaker and freedom fighter Nasir Uddin Yousuff, Federation of Film Societies of Bangladesh president Lailun Nahar Shemi, filmmakers Rezwan Shahriar Sumit and Humayra Bilkis, actor Dilruba Hossain Doyel and other notable film personalities were present during the award-giving ceremony.

Over the course of the festival, the cast and crew of Gondi, Nonajoler Kabbo, Raat Jaga Phool, and Laal Moroger Jhuti visited the festival premises. In addition to enjoying films, film enthusiasts had the opportunity to interact with the filmmakers and crew.

This festival is annually organised as a tribute to the martyrs of the Language Movement. It aspires to honour different languages around the world.

Critically acclaimed classics namely ‘Agantuk’, ‘Jiban Theke Neya’, ‘Komal Gandhar’ and contemporary films namely ‘Monpura’, ‘Rehana Maryam Noor’, ‘Aha!’, ‘Chandrabati Kotha’, ‘Cats Sticks’, ‘Alatchakra’, ‘Raat Jaga Phool’, ‘Nonajoler Kabbo’, ‘Laal Moroger Jhuti’ and others – a total of 19 features and one documentary from both Bangladesh and West Bengal have been screened over the course of the festival.

TSC premises were decorated during the festival with life-size posters of iconic Bangla films throughout history, provided by the Bangladesh Film Archive.

The festival has received a positive response from audiences and has had houseful shows since day one. Due to the pandemic, special safety precautions were duly taken by the organisers.

‘Amar Bhashar Chalachchitra’ started its journey back in 2002 with the aim of commemorating the great martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the Bengali language and promoting Bengali cinema to film enthusiasts.
