Ryan Coogler, the writer and director of “Black Panther,” says, he was falsely accused of bank robbery which “should have never happened.” The incident was initially reported by TMZ on Wednesday.
After a bank teller misinterpreted a warning regarding the director’s withdrawal request, Coogler, 35, was handcuffed and escorted out of an Atlanta Bank of America.
Coogler’s arrest was a case of mistaken identity, according to the Atlanta police department. Bank of America has apologized to the Hollywood director.
“This situation should never have happened,” Coogler said. “However, Bank of America worked with me and addressed it to my satisfaction and we have moved on,” Coogler said to The Hollywood Reporter.
“We deeply regret that this incident occurred. It never should have happened and we have apologized to Mr. Coogler,” reps from Bank of America said in a statement to USA TODAY. In turn, Coogler has accepted the apology.
Coogler explains he was withdrawing money to pay a medical professional who works at his home and prefers to be paid in cash. “I put my own card in, put my own PIN in. (The teller) asked to see my I.D., I gave it to her, and she goes in the back,” he said. “Next thing, I hear glocks getting pulled out.”
According to the police report, cops arrived and detained two people who were waiting for Coogler in the car in the bank’s parking lot and arrested them. Coogler was escorted out of the branch in handcuffs.
After Coogler confirmed his identity with his ID and Bank of America Account card, the police realized their error.
