Gias Uddin Selim’s much-anticipated movie ‘Gunin’ and Rubaiyat Hossain’s film for women by women ‘Shimu’ will be released in theatres today.
The premiere shows of both films were held at different places in the capital on March 9.
The premiere of the film ‘Gunin’ was slightly different, as the show was arranged in the style of the wedding ceremony of Romiz and Rabeya – two main characters of ‘Gunin’– played by Pori Moni and Shariful Razz. At the event, Pori Moni and Razz appeared in the looks of a bride and a groom. The duo is also a real-life couple who tied the knot recently.
Besides Razz and Porimoni, the film also stars eminent actor Dilara Zaman, Iresh Zaker, Mostafa Monwar, and Jhuna Chowdhury, among others, in pivotal roles.
Adapted from Hasan Azizul Haque’s book of the same name Chorki original ‘Gunin’ will be released in 20 cinemas across the country, while ‘Shimu’ will be released in 7 cinemas.
Filmmaker and OTT platform Chorki’s chief operation officer Redwan Rony informed that they have plans to release the film ‘Gunin’ on their OTT platform Chorki.
Regarding the film, director Gias Uddin Selim said, “During the pandemic situation, I started to read the short story of Hasan Azizul Haque. After reading ‘Gunin’ I thought a short film could be made based on the story. Later, I decided to make a full-length feature film on Gunin. At that time Chorki wanted to collaborate and I wrote a script based on Gunin.”
The story of ‘Gunin’ revolves around village exorcist Rajab Ali Gunin who possessed a vast spiritual power. The film follows the aftermath of Gunin’s mysterious death.
On the other hand, ‘Shimu’ is based on a true story of a woman’s triumph against all odds. It’s a film made by women about women.
About this film, Azmeri Haque said, “All I want to say is I saw one of my dreams coming true today where I saw a stage full of female cast and director together! There were many female crew members in this film. I highly appreciate everyone’s acting and work.”
The film ‘Shimu’ had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. The film was screened at the 63rd BFI London Film Festival.
Rikita Nandini Shimu won the Best Actress award at the Saint-Jean-de-Luz Film Festival in France. At the Torino Film Festival in Italy, she won the Interfade Award, and at the Amiens International Film Festival in France, the film has won three awards, including the Best Audience Award and the Jury Award.
