The horror short film ‘Moshari’ directed by Nuhash Humayun has won the jury award in ‘Midnights Short’ section at the 29th SXSW Film Festival.
‘Moshari,’ mosquito net, stars ‘No Dorai’ famed actress Sunerah Binte Kamal and Nuhash’s niece Nairah Onora Saif as two sisters trying to survive an apocalypse.
The jury and special prize winners for the 29th SXSW Film Festival were announced on Tuesday in Austin, Texas.
Nuhash Humayun has confirmed the news on his Facebook account.
He wrote, “SXSW JURY AWARD - MIDNIGHT SHORTS goes to MOSHARI!! This is crazy.”
“My parents separated when I was a kid, and my mom was always so busy because she was at university, so it was sort of like my sisters who raised me. That sisterly relationship, I thought there was something interesting there—just exploring ‘What happens when your sister becomes your mother because your parents are too busy or not there?’,” Nuhash shared his childhood memories as an inspiration for the film during an interview with horror magazine ‘Fangoria’.
The story of the short film revolves when the world is overrun with bloodthirsty creatures, the last of mankind persevere in Dhaka, Bangladesh by spending their nights inside the moshari - the only known shelter from the unknown threat.
Two sisters, Apu and Ayra, must navigate this strange new world to survive. However, their strained relationship is becoming as much of a threat as the dangers outside.
“We shot this film in 2019 in just five days. The story is so intriguing and engaging that we shot day and night without even taking a rest. Nuhash Humayun is one of my favourite directors. It’s always fun to work with him. I am very happy that the film has won award at such a prestigious award ceremony.” Sunehra told The Business Post.
South by Southwest, abbreviated as SXSW and colloquially referred to as South By, is an annual conglomeration of parallel film, interactive media, and music festivals and conferences organised jointly that will take place in mid-March in the US city of Austin.
