‘Shimu’ on 2nd week in cinemas

Rubaiyat Hossain’s internationally acclaimed film for women by women ‘Shimu’ will continue to screen at four cinemas in Dhaka, Chattogram, and Bogura for the second week.

The film will be screened at Star Cineplex’s Bashundhara City, SKS Tower in Dhaka, Sugandha Cinema Hall in Chattogram, and Madhuban Cinema Hall in Bogura.

The film “Shimu,” is based on the true story of labour activist Dahlia Akhtar. In the light of the role of the garment industry in empowering women and achieving self-reliance in Bangladesh, the story of the struggle and success of determined women garment workers has been narrated in the film.

Apart from Rubaiyat Hossain, most of its main crew was women. Notable among them are Sabin Lanchelin in filming, Elisha Albert in the soundtrack and Jonaki Bhattacharya in art direction.

The film stars Rikita Nandini Shimu, Novera Rahman, Dipanwita Martin, Parveen Paru, Mayabi Maya, Mostafa Monwar, Shatabdi Wadud, Jayaraj, Momena Chowdhury, Wahida Mallick Jolly, and Samina Lutfa among others. Mita Chowdhury and Shahana Goswami from India made guest appearances at the film.

Rubaiyat Hossain’s ‘Shimu’ was released on March 11 on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

Rubaiyat Hossain won the ‘Art International Award’ for the screenplay of the film. Rikita Nandini Shimu won the ‘Best Actress’ award at the Saint-Jean-de-Luz Film Festival in France and the ‘Interfade Award’ at the Torino Film Festival in Italy. Besides, the film has won three awards at the Amiens International Film Festival in France, including the ‘Best Audience Award’ and the ‘Jury Award’.

The film was released commercially in December 2019 in various cinemas in France, Denmark, Canada, and Portugal under the title ‘Made in Bangladesh’.
