Curtain rises on DU theatre festival today

The curtain will rise on the 15th edition of ‘Dhaka University Central Annual Theatre Festival’, organised by Theatre and Performance Studies Department of Dhaka University, at the university’s Natmandal today.

This annual event had to postpone last year due to the pandemic situation of Covid-19. As the situation became normal, nine plays will be staged in a festive atmosphere with the slogan ‘Shatabarsher Ei Alokteerthe Swadhinatar Ei Bijbhume Amader Sristir Ei Utsab Swatta O Swapner Bhasay Kori Kalarab’.

Vice chancellor of the university, Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman will inaugurate the festival at 7:00pm today, while State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid will be present as chief guest at the ceremony. Presided over by Theatre and Performance Studies department chairman Ashiqur Rahman, the university treasurer Professor Mamtajuddin Ahmed will present as special guest.

Eminent thespian Ramendu Majumder will be honoured with a special award for his lifelong contribution to Bangladesh’s theatre at the event.

The award was given to Ferdousi Mazumder, Aly Zaker and Ataur Rahman in the past.

During the 12-day festival, Samuel Beckett’s ‘Waiting for Godot’ directed by Dr Israfil Shaheen, seven plays ‘Kharij’, ‘Kothay Pabo Taare’, ‘Repertory Theatre A Play’, ‘The Shadow of Hummingbird’ ‘The two Character Play’, ‘Sesh Godhulir Ghum’ and ‘Nathbati Anathbat’ directed by the final semester students of the department.

On the other hand, an experimental presentation of Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Bisharjan’ directed by the department’s assistant professor Tanvir Nahid Khan will be staged from March 30 to April 1.
