Mismanagement mars ‘Cricket Celebrates Mujib 100’

The Bangladesh Cricket Board’s mega concert titled ‘Cricket Celebrates Mujib 100’, featuring Oscar-winning Indian musician AR Rahman, was marred by mismanagement and chaos on Tuesday.

AR Rahman was supposed to perform at the concert from 7:30pm to midnight but the start of the concert was delayed due to heavy rainfall which affected the equipment set-up on the stage as well.

The organisers were overconfident that there would be no rain on the day though Dhaka experienced heavy showers for the past few days. There was no preparation on the part of the BCB to face possible rain or nor’westers.

When the rain started, the audience who bought the expensive category tickets and was sitting under open sky close to the stage was seen rushing towards the gallery. Some used their chair to save their head from the rain. Some were seen getting drenched in the rain too.

BCB director Ismail Haider Mallick at a press briefing at BCB headquarters on Monday told journalists that there was no chance of rain during the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s arrival at the venue as per the weather forecast.

Due to the rain, the prime minister arrived at the concert venue at 8:30pm instead of 7:00pm. AR Rahman started to perform at the concert afterwards.

According to Mallick, AR Rahman and his musical troupe was supposed to perform more than 30 songs in the program but due to the delay by rain, the performance was cut short to only six to seven songs.

Not only that, the live telecast of the program was also disturbed and delayed.

The concert was arranged as part of the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s celebration of the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
