Disney/Marvel’s long anticipated film ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ sets to fire up the summer box office season.
The film is heading towards a $160M-$180M domestic start in what is the widest release ever during the pandemic era at 4,400 theaters, plus another $140M+ overseas. That would yield at least a $300M worldwide start, reports Deadline. The film will release globally on May 6.
After reporting previously that presales were the best of 2022 to date, outstripping The Batman, Fandango said this morning that the Sam Raimi-directed movie is selling five times as many tickets as 2016’s original Doctor Strange ($85M domestic opening) and besting the presales of Captain Marvel ($153.4M, 2019), Thor: Ragnarok ($122.7M, 2017) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($146.5M, 2014). At CinemaCon last week, Disney EVP Theatrical Distribution Tony Chambers announced that Doctor Strange already has banked $42M in presales.
In a recent Fandango poll of thousands about the Benedict Cumber batch sequel, moviegoers said:
93% are excited to see more Marvel films exploring the multiverse. 92% look forward to exploring the events following Spider-Man: No Way Home.
92% are fans of Benedict cumber batch. 90% are fans of director Sam Raimi. 85% are fans of Elizabeth Olsen. 83% are avoiding social media this week to avoid spoilers. 78% are fans of Wanda Vision.
“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will reshape the way we experience comic book movies moving forward,” Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis said. “Fans can’t wait to see what magic director Sam Raimi has in store for them as he delivers an epic spectacle that needs to be seen on the biggest screen possible,” he added.
Similar to Batman, Doctor Strange 2 won’t have Russia and China in its offshore bookings. Furthermore, because of having the LBGTQ topics majority of the Middle East isn’t screening the Marvel sorcerer.
