Projects to celebrate Mrinal’s birth centenary

As the birth centenary year of legendary director Mrinal Sen begins, the Bengali film arena is gearing up for a grand celebration of the event.

Mrinal’s son Kunal Sen on his father’s 99th birthday divulged that three popular directors of Tollywood would make two films and a web series based on the life of Mrinal Sen. Filmmaker Srijit Mukherji, who became successful in web platforms, announced that he is making a web series titled ‘Padatik, the foot soldier’, inspired by Sen’s life.

Srijit said the series would go on air on Mrinal’s 100th birth anniversary next year. Kaushik Ganguly, famed director of Arekti Premer Galpa and Bisharjan, is also making a feature film on Mrinal. The film Palan will feature Anjan Dutt, Mamata Shankar, Sreela Majumdar, Debapratim Dasgupta, Jisshu Sengupta, Paoli Dam.

Singer-turned-filmmaker Anjan Dutt is making a very personal feature film based on his interaction with Mrinal Sen.

“Today my father would have been 99. As a filmmaker and a human being, he lived a very full life. As we get closer to his centenary, he is getting the best appreciation that a filmmaker can hope to receive,” Kunal wrote on Facebook on the 99th birth anniversary.

Kunal said three films are under production celebrating the life and works of Mrinal. “Kaushik Ganguly is making a feature film, Palan, where he is taking the characters of Kharij and placing them 40 years ahead in current times. Many of the actors who were in Kharij are playing the same roles, but 40 years older. Srijit Mukherji is directing a fictionalised biography as a multipart web series. He is calling it Padatik (The Foot Soldier),” he added.

Kunal also informed Anjan Dutt is making a very personal feature film based on the interaction between the two of them as he started working with my father during the making of Chalchitra.

“We are all eagerly waiting to watch the finished films,” he added.

None of the three directors, however, talked to the media about who will be playing the role of Mrinal Sen in their productions.
