The trailer of the much-anticipated film “Mujib: The Making of a Nation” premiered at the 75th Cannes Film Festival’s Marché du Film Commercial Branch at the Indian pavilion on Thursday.
The biopic, a joint venture between Bangladesh and India, is directed by the acclaimed Indian director Shyam Benegal. The trailer launching ceremony was joined by Information and Broadcasting Minister Hasan Mahmud, Indian Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur, Bangladesh Ambassador to France Khondker M Talha, Bangladesh Film Development Corporation Managing Director Nuzhat Yeasmin and others, alongside lead actors of the film Arifin Shuvoo and Nusrat Imrose Tisha.
In his speech, Information Minister Hasan Mahmud said, “The film ‘Mujib’ depicts the glorious life of our Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, his victorious struggle for the nation and his absolute self-sacrifice.”
The trailer starts with the historic speech of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, played by Arifin Shuvoo. The trailer shows the life of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his struggles, which led to the independence of Bangladesh. Nusrat Imrose Tisha was also seen at the end of the trailer giving a speech.
Since its release, the trailer has garnered mixed reviews from the audience.
From the reactions in the YouTube comment section, it’s clear that they weren’t expecting such low-quality VFX for a big-budget film like this, but they’re still hopeful that the film will live up to their expectations.
Arefin Uday wrote, “I got goosebumps all over my body. The dialogue “This might be my last message, from today Bangladesh is independent” got me hard. Every Bengali can understand how it feels like.”
Kowshik wrote, “VFX work not up to the mark. Without vfx it’s really good work.” Mr Loy wrote, “Other than the VFX everything looks amazing! Shuvo bhai has done his best!”
The movie is based on a script by Atul Tiwari and Shama Zaidi, and is a co-production between the governments of India and Bangladesh.
The main cast includes Arifin Shuvoo in the titular role, Nusrat Imrose Tisha as Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s wife Sheikh Fazilatunnesa, and Nusraat Faria as their daughter Sheikh Hasina.
According to UNB, veteran actor Dilara Jaman will play the role of Bangbandhu’s mother Sahera Khatun, actor Khairul Alam Sabuj will portray Bangabandhu’s father Sheikh Lutfor Rahman, Shahidul Alam Sachchu as Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq, Ferdous Ahmed as Tajuddin Ahmed, Tauquir Ahmed as Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy, Tushar Khan as Tofazzal Hossain Manik Miah, Fazlur Rahman Babu as Khandakar Moshtaq Ahmed, and Misha Sawdagor as Aiyub Khan, among others. Piya Benegal and Nitish Roy are in charge of costume design and art direction of the film, respectively.
Director and cinematographer Mohammad Hossain Jaimy is the line producer of the Bangladeshi unit and renowned director Giasuddin Selim is working as the dialogue coach.
Veteran filmmaker Shyam Bengal, hailed as one of the pioneers of Indian parallel cinema, is the recipient of the coveted Padma Shri, the Padma Bhushan, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
Earlier in his career, he made critically acclaimed biographical films on prominent political and cultural figures such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Satyajit Ray, and Subhas Chandra Bose.
