Aamir’s ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ faces backlash, called for boycott

The hashtag #BoycottLalSinghChaddha has turned into the trending hashtag on Indian social media space after the release of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan’s ambitious remake of the Oscar-winning 1994 drama ‘Forrest Gump’. The film, released on Thursday (Aug 11), has been met with a barrage of controversies on social media since last week.

Even before its release, the film had faced major backlash from Indian audience, who called for a boycott of ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ as a 2015 clip from an interview resurfaced online. In the interview, Aamir spoke about his concern for the rising cases of violence against minorities in India — including cases of Muslims being lynched for the consumption of beef.

A day after its release, England cricketer Monty Panesar took to Twitter yesterday and wrote that the Aamir Khan-starrer is disrespectful towards Sikhs and the Indian Army.

His tweet read, “Forrest Gump fits in the US Army because the US was recruiting low IQ men to meet requirements for the Vietnam War. This movie is a total disgrace to India Armed Forces, Indian Army and Sikhs!! Disrespectful. Disgraceful. #BoycottLalSinghChadda (sic).”

A huge number of Indian netizens are also calling out to ban the film following Monty Panesar’s tweet.

The film is even being review-bombed on IMDb. The website is notorious for being extremely easy to manipulate, despite the changes that it has introduced over the years to its audience rating system. Currently, LSC has an average rating of 4.2/10, but evidence of the rating being tampered with can be seen in the large number of 1-star reviews that it has received; this has long been considered a tell-tale sign of manipulation.
