‘Rise and Shine’ at Mahila Samity today

Theatre troupe BotTala is going to stage its 16th production titled ‘Rise and Shine’ today at 7:00pm at Bangladesh Mahila Samity Auditorium, Bailey Road in the capital.

Muhammad Sayeed directed the play, which was originally written by Dario Luigi Angelo Fo and his wife Franca Rame. Eminent academic, writer and translator Abdus Selim translated the play into Bangla.

The original play was about a female factory worker and the play of the ‘Rise and Shine’ also revolves around the struggles of a young female factory worker. Kazi Roksana Ruma will play the lead character in this play

Rise and Shine starts with a female garment worker awakening from a nightmare while gripping the finger she dreamt had been pierced by a sewing machine needle. She breaks down in tears and complains that the factory manager is abusing her and refusing to let her work. She begins to worry about how she would feed her young child.

She slowly describes her daily routine to the audience. The play offers the audience a window into the life of several working class women all around the world by demonstrating how people take advantage of them in both at home and at work. Almost all women, all mothers, and all working women will be able to relate themselves with this 1 hour 15 min play.
