The renowned Bangladeshi musician, film director, producer, and lyricist Gazi Mazharul Anwar who died on September 4 was remembered by his family and artistes who were close to him through a commemorative event at the National Art Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) on Monday. Geetikabi Sangha Bangladesh, in association with BSA, organised the commemorative event.

Presided over by BSA Director General Liaquat Ali Lucky, Information and Broadcast Minister Hasan Mahmud attended the event as the chief guest at the event.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said the government will do what it takes to preserve the literary works of iconic lyricist Gazi Mazharul Anwar at the new complex of Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC).

“I want to say that with his death I felt like I lost an elder brother, a guardian and a friend of mine. He was there for me always. I don’t think the bond I shared with him can be with anyone else. I want to request one thing that please doesn’t remake songs that were made and composed by senior singers. May his soul rest in peace,” said Khurshid Alam.

“I feel proud to be a part of his life. He was an amazing person. He was a successful person in every segment of his life. He was an amazing father, brother, son, husband, and grandfather too. He was like fervour and I always supported his spirit. He always used to say that please pray to the Almighty that he can keep writing till the end of my life and I think Almighty grant his wish. Maybe that’s why he wrote, ‘Sob Nodir Dheu Bondhu Soman Tale Chole Na’. I never thought it would be his last song. He was loved by everyone and I’m witnessing the love of all even after his life. His greatest achievement was the love he received from the audience. I hope that his works will be loved by future generations,’ said his widow, Zohara Gazi.

“My father didn’t want much. Even before his death, he told my mother (I’m thankful to you as you gave me a happy prosperous life and you gave me Upol and Dithi, I don’t want anything more.) He was lucky enough to receive the Independence Award. He was successful in every way. He used to love his country the most. May he rest in peace,” said his daughter, Dithi Anwar. She also said her family took the initiative to make an archive of his songs. 250 songs written by Gazi Mazharul Anwar are now available in the first edition of the book titled ‘Olpo kothar Golpo Gaan’ and we are planning to publish some more editions of the book.

In the event, Dithi Anwar urged to Government to make Gazi Mazharul Anwar as a study subject, while General Secretary Asif Iqbal requested to name a road after him.

After the discussion, singers Khurshid Alam, Monir Khan, Anupoma Mukti, Champa Bonik, Apu Aman, Pulok, Yousuf and Dithi Anwar rendered songs at the event.
