‘Lal Zamin’ to be staged at educational institutes

Shunnon Repertory Theatre’s first production ‘Lal Zamin,’ a solo play based on the Liberation War, is set to be staged at secondary and higher secondary institutes across Bangladesh. The announcement came from a recent press conference organised by Shunnon at Anuswar studio in capital’s Kakrail region.

Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni saw the play, written by Mannan Hira and directed by Sudip Chakraborty, and felt the importance of exhibiting it in educational institutions across the country and provided necessary guidance to its team. Later on September 18, a notice has been issued by the Director General of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education to exhibit the play in educational institutions across the country.

The solo play stars veteran actress Momena Chowdhury. Actor and Shunnon President Ziaul Hasan Kislu and Momena were present at the press conference.

Under the patronage of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, a total of 78 shows of the play ‘Lal Zamin,’ have already been staged in remote areas across the country. Biswa Sahitya Kendra, a non-profit institution in Bangladesh to promote reading habits, enlightenment and progressive ideas among students and general public, helped stage 15 shows of the play across 15 colleges in the country. Bangladesh Police helped to stage the play in 42 police lines around the nation. It has also been staged in several countries abroad.

Shannon’s play ‘Lal Zamin’ is a dramatisation of the struggling life of a woman during the Liberation War and post-war Bangladesh.

The latest and 306th performance of the play was held at the Studio Theater Hall of the National Theatre Hall at the capital’s Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on October 13.

This is the first time in the history of Bangladeshi theatre that a play with a single actor has had more than 300 shows.
