Ekushey Padak-winning actor Masum Aziz passes away

Ekushey Padak-winning veteran actor and screenplay writer Masum Aziz is no more. The actor breathed his last on Monday at 3:30 pm, at Square hospital in the Capital.

Faisal Hasan, senior information officer of the Cultural Affairs Ministry confirmed the news.

He was battling cancer for several years and suffering from heart-related ailments too. The actor was admitted to a hospital on October 12. After his condition started to deteriorate he had been put on life support on October 13.

Sammilita Sangskritik Jote president Golam Quddus told the press that the body of the veteran actor Masum Aziz will be kept in Square Hospital for the night. Sammilita Shangskritik Jote will then take his remains to the Central Shaheed Minar today from 11 am to 12:30 pm where people from all walks of life can pay their respects.

Afterwards, his body will be taken to his village in the Pabna district and he will be buried there.

State Minister for Cultural Affairs Ministry KM Khalid expressed deep shock and sorrow at the demise of the talented actor.

His co-artists also expressed their deep sorrow on his departure.

Masum Aziz, a veteran performer of stage and TV dramas, was suffering from heart problems for a long time along with cancer. In 2017, he was diagnosed with four blocks in his heart and underwent surgery.

Aziz started his journey as an actor in 1972. He has performed on stage, television and film. While studying at Chittagong University, he made his acting debut in theatre. In 1985, he debuted in TV drama. Masum has starred in more than four hundred TV dramas and notable films.

He has been honoured with the National Film Award for his performance in ‘Ghani’ in 2006. Apart from this, he was awarded the Ekushey Padak, the country’s second-highest civilian award, this year for his contribution to acting.
