Singer Akbar’s right leg amputated

Doctors amputated the right leg of ‘Ityadi’-famed singer Akbar Ali Gazi, commonly known by his stage name Akbar, yesterday afternoon. Akbar’s wife Kaniz Fatema confirmed the matter to the press, quoting the doctors, “There was no other option but to amputate his leg from below the knee. This was the only way we had to save him.”

At the time of writing the report, he was still unconscious from anesthesia at the capital’s Better Life Hospital in Rampura.

Akbar had been admitted to the capital’s Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Medical College Hospital on September 14 due to various complications including diabetes and kidney disease.

On September 19, Kaniz told the press, “Some parts of his ankle are being surgically amputated due to the rotting.” On Monday afternoon, they were trying to save his ankle by cutting off some more flesh. When that was not possible, tissue transplantation was also attempted. Yet, all options failed.

Kaniz said they were feeling helpless at that point when a private television channel came to their aid and helped Akbar to move to Better Life Hospital in Rampura, where the surgery took place. She also asked everyone to pray for Akbar.

Previously, renowned Dhallywood actor Dipjol helped them to take Akbar to India for better treatment. His condition improved after returning from there and he could walk with the help of crutches. Suddenly, his condition deteriorated and he had to be hospitalized. Kaniz said that his doctors think that Akbar’s condition deteriorated due to his diabetes.

Akbar has been suffering from various diseases including diabetic-kidney complications for a long time. Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina donated Tk 20 lakh for his treatment last year. He is still being treated with that donation.
