The new ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ trailer arrives on Wednesday and reveals more of the sequel’s underwater story, reports Vulture. James Cameron introduced audiences to the world of Pandora and the Na’vi people in 2009 with the first Avatar movie. Thanks to its innovation in CGI and use of 3D, the movie became a box office phenomenon as it went on to become the highest-grossing movie ever made.
Cameron took his time developing Avatar 2 and the future of the franchise, deciding to wait until the technology was capable of capturing what he wanted. This is due to the sequel’s story heavily incorporating water as the world of Pandora expands beyond Jake Sully and Neytiri.
The long-awaited first look at James Cameron’s ‘Avatar 2’ arrived earlier this year, as Disney debuted the first trailer in May. The footage revealed the ground-breaking visual effects that the director is once again using as part of the sequel’s new underwater setting. Even though the Avatar 2 trailer was visually impressive, the footage still left some debate about whether Cameron would deliver a better story with the sequel. The original ‘Avatar’ is commonly critiqued for copying ‘Pocahontas’ or Studio Ghibli’s ‘Princess Mononoke’ or even just having a less interesting story than some viewers desire.
Disney and 20th Century released a new ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ trailer on Wednesday (November 2) morning ahead of the sequel’s December 16, 2022 release date. The new trailer once again highlights the stunning CGI that the sequel incorporates under James Cameron’s guidance and through the underwater story. The ‘Avatar 2’ trailer also delivers some genuine emotion as the story is teased, with Jake Sully and Neytiri sharing a particularly emotional exchange at the end.
