Paying tribute to noted playwright, actor and director Syed Mohidul Islam on his 20th death anniversary, a five-day festival titled ‘Syed Mohidul Islam Smaran Utsab 2022’ (Syed Mohidul Islam Memorial Festival) will begin on the premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in the capital today.
The pogramme will feature discussions and various cultural activities—including musical performances, dance recitals, and theatrical plays. During the five-day festival, five popular theatre troupes--four from Bangladesh and one from India--are scheduled to stage their productions.
The inaugural ceremony of the event will take place at 6pm on at the National Theatre Hall on November 4. Theatre troupe Lok Nattyadol will stage their production ‘Tapashi O Torongini’ on that day. A documentary on Syed Mohidul Islam titled ‘Obhinoy Guru’ will also be premiered at the event too.
On the second day, On November 5 Batikrom Nattyagosty will stage its play ‘Pakhi’ at the Experimental Theatre Hall, while Theatre troupe Shobdo Nattyacharcha Kendro will be performing ‘Ki Chaho Shangkhochil’ on November 6 at National Theatre Hall. On November 7, Indian Bengali theatre group Mal Actowala will stage the play, ‘Corona Kaaler Mondo Akyhan’ at the National Theatre Hall.
Apart from the cultural programmes, Batikrom Nattyagosty will honour renowned theatre personality and professor of Theatre and Performance Studies Department of University of Dhaka, Dr Israfeel Shaheen with the ‘Syed Mohidul Islam Padak’, while the Manchabandhu Padak will be given to freedom fighter and actor, Professor Ziaul Hasan Kislu; actor, director and playwright Sudhanshu Biswas; actress Sangeeta Chowdhury; director, actor and organiser, Momin Babu and Masud Alam Babu.
The Jugol (Duo) awards will be given to Mir Sabbir and Farzana Chumki, Abu Hashim Masuduzzaman, Laila Bilkis Chhobi, Habib Masud, Monami Islam and Shurojit Bose and Shulekha Bose.
On the closing day of the festival, Chandrokola Theatre will stage its play ‘Sheikh Saadi’ on November 8.
