World Press Photo exhibition grabs viewers’ attention at Drik

The Dhaka Edition of the World Press Photo Exhibition 2022 is now attracting people around different walk towards the exhibition which recognise and celebrate the best photojournalism and documentary produced last year around the world.

Inaugurated on Friday November 5 at the Drik Gallery the exhibition is showcasing photo stories, comprising 122 photographs, of 24 photographers from 23 countries, namely Bangladesh, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Japan, Madagascar, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Palestine, Russia, Sudan, and Thailand.

World Press Photo Foundation Executive Director Joumana El Zein Khoury, Photographer and former World Press Photo Jury Abir Abdullah, and Managing Director of Drik, ex-jury board chair for the World Press Photo contest and eminent photojournalist Shahidul Alam were also present at the inauguration ceremony.

Joumana El Zein Khoury stated, “I want to talk about photojournalists who work at the risk of their lives, who strives to present the current news to the world through a perfect picture that can be understood at a glance. She further added, “In the current reality, the career and quality of life of photojournalists are becoming difficult every day. They are struggling not only in the security issue but also in the economic field. It is important to strengthen the media by making the photojournalist as important as a reporter in a newsroom.”

The displayed photographs have been selected– from 64,823 entries by 4,066 photographers from 130 countries– by a global jury board composed of seven members.

From the 24 regional winners in each of the four categories of WPP’s contest model, the 2022 Contest jury selected the four global winners which was USA-based photographer Amber Bracken’s Kamloops Residential School. He was awarded World Press Photo of the year.

Australian Matthew Abbott’s Saving Forests with Fire won the World Press Photo Story of the year while Brazilian Lalo de Almeida’s Amazonian Dystopia won WPP Long-Term Project Award and Ecuadorian Isadora Romero’s Blood is a Seed won the WPP Open Format Award.

“This exhibition is a wonderful initiative as through this we are getting the chance to see some of the best photographs which depicts the truth. Usually we don’t get the chance to see so many amazing works at one place. I am really enjoying here,” said Shibab one of the visitors at the exhibition.

“I am not a photographer but yet I’m here to see the exhibition and I’m enjoying myself here a lot. Reading the stories of the photographs, it’s actually a different type of feeling which is difficult for me to express in words,” said Tanjin another visitor at the dirk gallery.

The World Press Photo Exhibition 2022 began its worldwide tour in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on April 15. It has been held in more than 20 countries so far.

The exhibition will remain open at Drik Gallery till November 21, every day from 3:00pm to 8:00pm.
