State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM khalid handed over 10,000 USD or 10 lakh and 50 thousand taka royalty payment to Shah Nur Jalal, son of Baul Shah Abdul Karim at a website Inauguration programme of music by Hason Raja, Baul Samrat Shah Abdul Karim and Renowned Rabindra Sangeet Artist Rezwana Choudhury Bannya organised by Bangladesh Copyright Office yesterday.

“My father never though that his songs will earn money. He (Shah Abdul Karim) would have been very happy to see this initiative taken, if he were alive,” said Shah Nur Jalal.

“Artistes are the holders and carriers of culture. In order to perpetuate their works and spread them among the new generation, websites of 20 more websites on famous artistes will be made by the Bangladesh Copyright Office in the current financial year. This will ensure the preservation of their creative work as well as the right to receive appropriate royalties,” said K M Khalid.

The representatives of the three organizations related to music namely Gitikobi Sangh Bangladesh, Singers Association and Music Composers Society will meet and decide which 20 artistes’ websites will be made. Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the Bangladesh Copyright Office will provide necessary support in this regard.

After the death of Ekushey Padak-winning Baul Shah Abdul Karim, many used his songs commercially without taking permission from his family. Taking this situation into account, the Bangladesh Copyright Office registered the intellectual property rights of 472 songs by Abdul Karim in December of last year.

The songs were later archived on the website, shahabdulkarim.com. Under the supervision of Zafar Raja Chowdhury, former registrar of the Copyright Office, ZM Studios provided technical assistance in the development of the website, to help preserve Abdul Karim’s music.
