A tribute to Soumitra Chatterjee

Soumitra Chatterjee is an Indian actor, playwright and poet. World-renowned film director Satyajit Ray has acted in multiple shadow films. He has made Bengali film a place in the court of the world. In his long acting career, he has received many awards from home and abroad. His films have also won numerous awards. He died on 15th November, 2020 at the age of 85. Even after his death, his performance has been and will always be remembered in the hearts of all the audience.

Starting with his debut film, ‘Apur Sansar’, the third part of ‘The Apu Trilogy’, as adult Apu, he went on to work in several films with Ray, including ‘Abhijan’, ‘Charulata’, ‘Aranyer Din Ratri’. ‘Ashani Sanket’, ‘Sonar Kella’ and ‘Joi Baba Felunath’ as Feluda, ‘Hirak Rajar Deshe’, ‘Ghare Baire’, ‘Shakha Proshakha’ and ‘Ganashatru’.

Soumitra Chatterjee has acted in 14 of Ray’s 34 films. After his first work in ‘Apur Sansar’, he later worked with famous directors like Mrinal Sen, Tapan Singh, and Ajay Kar. He had previously been a radio announcer. The most popular of his characters is Feluda. In contrast, Suchitra Sen, Savitri Chatterjee, Madhavi Chakraborty, Sharmila Tagore, Aparna Sen, Sumitra Mukherjee, Wahida Rahman Tanuja and other prominent actresses have played the lead roles. He has acted with Uttam Kumar in several films. In addition to movies, he has acted in many dramas and TV series. Apart from acting, he has written plays and poems. He was also the editor of the literary magazine ‘Ekshan’. In 2015, he performed ‘Gangachhari’ at the Ganga Jamuna Drama and Cultural Festival in Bangladesh on behalf of his team.

In India, he has been honoured with many awards including Padma Bhushan, Dadasaheb Phalke. Soumitra Chatterjee, an iconic figure in the world of Bengali culture, passed away on November 15, 2020 after a prolonged 40 days illness.
