Aranyak to mark 200th staging of ‘Rarang’

Theatre troupe Aranyak Natyadal will stage the 199th show of its 40th production ‘Rarang’ (The Distant Drum) at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) today at 7pm, while the 200th show will be staged tomorrow at the same time and venue.

Popular actor Chanchal Chowdhury will be making a comeback to the theatre stage after an extended break with this production.

Chanchal was a regular performer on the stage for Aranyak Natyadal. However the last time he performed the play was four years ago, on the birthday of his mentor, Mamunur Rashid, which was February 29.

Chanchal will be playing the role of a police officer in this production and shared the stage with AKM Hasan.

“I played the role of a police officer in this production. Those who have watched the play before, knows that I share the stage with AKM Hasan. I hope the audience will enjoy our chemistry”, he added.

The play, ‘Rarang’ has been written and directed by veteran thespian Mamunur Rashid. The play casts popular stage actors including Tamalika Karmakar, Mamunur Rashid and others.

‘Rarang’, is a Santal word that means ‘a call to rise’.

The play revolves around the struggles of the Santal community, an ethnic minority group living mostly in the northern part of Bangladesh.
