Runa Laila: I am missing my parents, elder sister

Today marks the 70th birthday of legendary Bangladeshi singer Runa Laila. Celebrities and her co-artistes shower love on Runa Laila with birthday wishes today.

On this occasion, she will take part in ‘Taraka Kathan’ which will be aired on Channel i. Produced by Ananya Ruma, the special show of ‘Taraka Kathan’ will be aired on Channel i at 12.30 pm. Here the veteran singer will be honoured on the red carpet. A special song on Runa Laila sung by Sera Kantha winner Konal, Jhilik, Tariq Mridha, and Mejbah Bappi will also be aired on the same programme. Written by Hasnat Karim Pintu, the song has been composed by Monwar Hossain Tutul. 

Regarding her birthday Runa Laila said, “I don’t feel any special about my birthday now. Though some close people of mine are planning something for this day for a long time. My family members also planned to make the day special for me. There will be a special programme on Channel i.”

“I am missing my parents and my elder sister Dina Laila on this day. If they were here my big day would have been much more special today. Yet it’s important to be happy with those who are with me now. I am happy and healthy by the grace of the almighty. I will ask everyone to keep me in their prayers,” she added.

Runa Laila is one of the most popular singers in South Asia. She started her career in the Pakistan film industry in the late 1960s. Runa Laila’s professional career began in 1965. In the Pakistani film ‘Jugnu’, she sang two songs. Her first song was ‘Gudiya Si Munni Meri Bhaiya Ki Pyari,’ and her second song was a love song called ‘Marna Bhi Nahin Aasan.’

In 1966, at the age of 14, she made her place in the audience’s heart with the song ‘Unki Nazron Sey Mohabbat Ka Jo Paigham Mila’ for the Pakistani film titled ‘Hum Dono’.

Runa Laila has lent her voice to the song in seventeen languages-- Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Gujarati, Pashto, Baluchi, Arabic, Persian, Malay, Nepalese, Japanese, Italian, Spanish, French, and English.

Apart from being a singer Runa Laila also acted in Chashi Nazrul Islam’s film ‘Shilpi’. She acted opposite renowned actor Alamgir in that film. Talking about her interest in acting she said she will not be in acting though. 

“I acted from my interest though. To be honest, acting is hard. As the film ‘Shilpi’ was based on my own life so I acted because Chashi Nazrul Islam influenced me towards acting. I won’t dare to act. I’m a singer and this is my identity. I love that truly,” said Runa Laila.

On November 19, Runa Laila will attend the award ceremony as the chief guest organized by Starplus Communication.
