Curtain rises on 19th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh today

The curtain will rise on the month-long ‘19th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh 2022’ today on the premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in the capital’s Segun Bagicha area. Organised jointly by Cultural Affairs Ministry and BSA, the exhibition is taking place at the National Art Gallery of Shilpakala Academy. Director General of BSA Liaquat Ali Lucky informed that a jury panel comprising five members one from Bangladesh and one each from Sri Lanka, Poland Turkey, and United Kingdom has selected the artworks, which will be displayed at the 19th Asian Art Biennale. The jury board has also selected the best artworks for three grand prizes and six honourable mention prizes.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the exhibition virtually as the chief guest today, while Ministry of Cultural Affairs secretary Abul Monsur, president of the jury board Rafiqun Nabi and member of jury board Jaroslaw Suchan will be the special guests at the event. 

State Minister for Ministry of Cultural Affairs KM Khalid on behalf of the Prime Minister will hand over the award to the awardees. 

The 19th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh 2022 has been dedicated to the name of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to respect his birth centenary celebration. In that context, a number of 125 countries have been invited to participate in this exhibition. This year, 493 artists from 114 countries will participate with 649 artworks; among these 149 Bangladeshi artists will be participating with 156 artworks. 

A total of 114 countries, including Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, China, Egypt, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, United States of America (USA), Mongolia, Peru, Italy, Iraq, Iran, Ireland, Kenya, Turkey, Ukraine, Germany, Finland, Ghana, Greece, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and Qatar are participating in the event. 

In addition to the display of artworks and performances, covering varied topics encompassing different styles and forms of art will be held on December 9 and 10 on the topics ‘Home and Displacement’ on the premises of BSA with the participation of local and foreign artists. 

The ‘Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh’ is the oldest and most prestigious international art festival in the Asian continent, which has been organized continuously for the past four decades. To make it well known to collectors this international art festival was initiated on a biennale basis. The Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh exhibits two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks such as paintings, prints, photographs, sculptures, installations, and new media arts.
