Int’l art seminar talks on causes of forced displacement

Artists and art critics at a two-day seminar explored the causes of forced displacement and how various artists have addressed the issues through artworks.

“Migration, be it forced or otherwise, is a reality today and has remained so since time immemorial. Human history is replete with stories of displacement. If war, famine and even political pogrom enforced migration in the past, in recent history human-induced climate crisis is displacing millions who continue to flood the cities leaving behind their erstwhile homes in coastal areas,” said Mustafa Zaman.

“The changing patterns of art might continue to draw peoples’ attention to both their content and form, but this is not enough to change the way world leaders continue to operate on the political stage,” he added.

The two-day long seminar titled ‘Home and Displacement’ ended Saturday at the National Art Gallery Auditorium of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. It was arranged as part of the month-long 19th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh 2022.

BSA director general and chief coordinator of the ‘19th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh 2022’, Liaquat Ali Lucky inaugurated the seminar on Friday. Artist and art critic Mustafa Zaman presented the keynote paper titled ‘Places of Belonging, Stories of Displacement’ on the first day of the seminar with writer-art critic and the convener of the seminar committee Syed Manzoorul Islam in the chair.

The second day’s proceedings began with the speech of writer professor Nazma Khan Majlis where writer Azhar Ahmed and professor of English at Dhaka University Shamsad Mortuza joined in discussion.

In the evening of the second day, a cultural show was arranged to present the Bangali culture in the international arena that featured Baul Songs. Around 50 Baul singers participated in the programme including, Chandana Majumdar, Tuntun Fakir, Nayan Sadhu, Latif Shah, Eliza Putul, Dolly Mondal and others.

‘19th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh 2022’ is currently underway at BSA and will continue till January 7.
