The year 2022 is said to be a turning point for the Dhallywood film industry. More than 50 films have been released this year. Although the majority of those failed to create an impact because of films like Hawa, Poran, Gului, Damal and some others, it is being said that the year was a game changer for the Bangladeshi entertainment industry. As the year 2022 is about to come to an end, The Business Post is going to give a short review of films that left a mark on the hearts of the audience.

A year for Bangladeshi films

Hawa

The most hyped Bangladeshi movie of 2022 is ‘Hawa’ without a doubt, was a game changer film for the industry. Written and directed by Mejbaur Rahman Sumon and produced by A Facecard Productions and Sun Music & Motion Pictures Limited, the film earned around 160 million BDT at the box office. The film stars Chanchal Chowdhury, Nazifa Tushi, Sariful Razz, Sumon Anowar, Shohel Mondol, Nasir Uddin Khan and Rizvi Rizu among others. Not just in Bangladesh, but the film successfully made its way to international cinema halls on September 2 this year, in 13 halls in Canada and 73 halls in the USA, and also became the first time any Bangladeshi film has reached the top 30 charts in the US. Released on July 29, it has a solid 8/10 IMDb rating.

Poran

Bangladeshi romantic thriller film ‘Poran’ directed by Raihan Rafi became the most anticipated film this year. MD Tamzid Ul Alam produced the film under his production house, Live Technologies. The movie features Bidya Sinha Saha Mim, Sariful Razz, and Yash Rohan in lead roles. Based on true events, the film grossed approximately Tk 12 crores at the box office. Released in the theaters on July 10, IMDb rated this movie 7.6/10.

Golui

Directed by SA Haque Alik, Golui is one of the government-granted romantic drama films that was released on May 3. Khorshed Alam Khorsu wrote the story of the film and also produced it. The film stars Dhallywood superstar Shakib Khan in lead. Puja Cherry was seen opposite him. Apart from them, it casts Jhuna Chowdhury, Shamu Chowdhury, Azizul Hakim, Monuwar Hussain, and others. The film has a 7.8/10 IMDb rating and is now available for streaming on the OTT platform Bioscope.

Shaan

This 2-hour 30 min long movie may be rated 6/10 by IMDb. The film stars Siam Ahmed, Puja Cherry Roy, Champa, Taskeen Rahman, Aruna Biswas and others. It is a Bangladeshi action thriller film directed by M Raahim. The film made the directorial debut of the young director. Released in May 3, ‘Shaan’ released in 80 North American movie theatres on June 24. It later got screens in France too.

Damal

Director Raihan Rafi takes the scene into his hands again with this his film ‘Damal’. The film is a Bangladeshi period drama film produced by Impress Telefilms. The story is based on true events and untold history, for it will revolve around two football teams from different eras: the legendary Shadhin Bangla Football Team and a similar team from the present. The film features Sariful Razz, Bidya Sinha Saha Mim, Siam Ahmed and Shahnaz Sumi in the lead roles. It has grossed over 2 crores at the box office even though it was released on October 28th. IMDb rated it 7.9/10 which is quite a bit higher than the previous 2 mentions.

Din-The Day

It will not be fair to end the year review without Ananta Jalil’s ‘Din- The Day’. Though the film was a disaster however it somehow grabbed the attention of the audience. The film ends with the lowest IMDb rating of 3.4/10. The movie was a Bangladeshi–Iranian joint produced action film directed by Morteza Atashzamzam and produced by Ananta Jalil hisself under his production house Monsoon Films. Ananta Jalil and Afiea Nusrat Barsha play the lead roles in this film which Ananta Jalil claimed that the cost of making it was estimated to be around half a million dollars or 5 crores that made the film by far the most costly movie of the year.
