Rabindra Sangeet maestro Sumitra Sen passes away

Legendary Rabindra Sangeet exponent Sumitra Sen breathed her last on Tuesday. She was 89 at the time of death.

Her daughter Sraboni Sen, confirmed the news via social media and quoted on Tuesday on her Facebook handle which reads “Mother is no more; she left us in the early morning”.

The deceased singer was suffering from different age-related ailments for quite some time. She had also contracted bronchopneumonia recently. Sen was admitted to a city hospital for the last few days and on Monday, she returned home. According to her elder daughter Indrani Sen, despite her declining health, the veteran singer was fully in her senses and was able to recognize each who came to visit her. Sumitra Sen was undergoing treatment for severe bronchopneumonia. Her condition deteriorated on January 2 and she passed away on the wee hours of January 3.

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condoled the veteran singer’s demise saying, ‘’I am deeply saddened by the sudden demise of Sumitra Sen, who had enthralled the audience for decades. I had a close relationship with her for a long time. The West Bengal government had awarded her ‘Sangeet Mahasamman’ in 2012. Her passing away is an irreparable loss to the music world. My sincere condolences to Sumitra di’s daughters Indrani and Srabani, and her fans.’’

Sumitra Sen’s daughters Srabanti Sen and Indrani Sen are also Rabindra Sangeet icons and have continued their mother’s legacy.

The legendary singer was born on March 7, 1933. From a very young age she started taking lessons in Rabindra Sangeet and received critic’s accolades for her district style.
